Lucca is one of Tuscany's most beloved cities: Renaissance walls you can walk and cycle along, a hundred churches, the Guinigi Tower with holm oaks on its top, and squares that have kept their medieval soul intact. But it is also a city with a strict ZTL (limited traffic zone) and restricted access for tourist vehicles โ organizing a group's arrival without knowing the local logistics can turn into wasted time.
With a chauffeured NCC bus that problem disappears: we take care of it. Here is the complete guide to visiting Lucca and Versilia with a group.
Lucca's symbol: 4.2 km of tree-lined walkway encircling the entire historic centre. They are the only intact city walls in Europe turned into a public promenade. Perfect for a group stroll or a bike ride (rentals at the foot of the walls).
Built on the foundations of the Roman amphitheatre, it is one of Italy's most scenic squares: elliptical, enclosed, with pastel-coloured houses following the curve of the ancient tiers. Ideal for the group's coffee break.
The cathedral houses the Volto Santo, a wooden crucifix venerated by centuries of pilgrims, and Jacopo della Quercia's funeral monument to Ilaria del Carretto, an absolute masterpiece of 15th-century sculpture.
The tower with trees on top: 230 steps for an unforgettable view over the sea of red roofs and the Apuan Alps. With large groups it's best to stagger the climb โ the terrace is small.
Lucca is Puccini's city: his birthplace in Corte San Lorenzo is now a museum. For music groups and cultural trips it pairs well with the Puccini Museum and โ in summer โ the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, half an hour away by coach.
Lucca's historic centre lies entirely within the walls and is closed to tourist traffic. Coaches stop at the dedicated parking areas just outside:
Our driver knows the access routes, one-way systems and loading/unloading times: the group gets off a stone's throw from the walls and finds the coach again at the agreed point and time, stress-free.
๐ญ Lucca Comics & Games: in late October/early November the city hosts Europe's largest comics and gaming festival. Closed streets, tens of thousands of visitors a day: if you want to bring a group, book your transport well in advance โ it is one of the most in-demand periods of the year.
Lucca's position makes it perfect for combined itineraries:
